This poem was written by Angela Record and presented to Jim at the launch.
The Avalonian
James Lindsay Fidler is an Avalonian
past, present and future.
The rhythm of the rock flows
through his soul
He is a musician, storyteller
and alchamist extraordinaire
who weaves a powerful magic
through his songs.
Like a master boatbuilder preparing
to build a beautiful ship
Jim plants a sapling in the sun,
tends and waters it through time
until each branch and leaf is formed.
Jim fells his tree with love and care
And carves each plank by hand
planing and shaping every curve
So his ship is the best it can be.
Inspired by men of worth
Like Bob Marley and Nelson Mandela
Jim in turn inspires others
with his vision and his strength.
His friends love him most for
his wit, wisdom and wicked sense of humour.
Lillian is his companion in life’s ocean
and his friends are familiar ports of call.
This island’s triumphs and hardships
have given strength to
Newfoundlanders old and new;
A proud Ambassador for Avalonia
Jim spreads his love for his nation
To all who seek the truth and all who care.
Music influenced by Jim’s early years
With his tiny radio under his childhood pillow;
Tuning in and out across the stations
Jim learned to listen to the world with
eyes wide open.
The music Jim has written
touches our minds and hearts
Like the gentle mists of Terra Nova
Future music promises to be
familiar as an old friend
who we have yet to meet.
May Jim’s love of life grow stronger
with the lapping of time on shore
So fair and gentle winds
Can blow his ship safely to ports anew.
